The Visitor Center was small but well-organized with tons of things for the kids to look at and activities for them to try.
We learned about the history of the area including facts about the roles Leesylvania played in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
First, we HAD to focus on the educational part of the Center, learning about Henry Lee and his founding of the area named Leesylvania Plantation. We learned that he lived at the time of George Washington and was the great-grandfather of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The Visitor Center also had craft areas set up so the children could try their hands at weaving and cross-stitch. They love hand-on learning :-)
We had to pry Emily away from the loom!
Of course, Christopher and Lydia had tons of fun in the Nature Center with the reptiles and other animals...alive and NOT ;-)
At the waterfront, the kids had fun finding snails. In the pictures, Lydia is holding the one she decided to keep :-) The snails were huge! I hadn't realized Christopher, Emily, and Lydia had never seen a snail before. Thank goodness they were mostly empty shells ;-)
The scenery by the waterfront was so beautiful!
By the waterfront area was a bridge that looked over a pond. A Boy Scout years ago had made this his Eagle Project with an educational area describing the animals, insects, and fish that live in the pond.
Of course, we had to take advantage of the playground! You're never too old ;-)
This was the coolest see-saw that we've ever seen :-D
For only having a few hours to spare, we had a great time! I am so glad that we are trying to remain faithful to our weekly homeschool field trips :-) The weather was perfect, and we had a fun, educational time! We will definitely be back to Leesylvania State Park :-D
